Elmhurst Extended Care is a vibrant community of Elders assisted by a staff of Elder Care specialists dedicated to providing the highest quality of care. We are committed to offering a community where life is meaningful, where compassion, warmth and respect are abundant and where care giving comes from the heart.

Elmhurst has the distinction of being the only Elder Care facility in Rhode Island affiliated with a hospital (Roger Wil! liams Medical Center). Our Elders take comfort in knowing they have eas! y access to a broad range of Elder Care professionals that include physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, therapists and psychologists.

Elmhurst also has the distinction of being the only Eden Alternative certified nursing home in Rhode Island. This innovative philosophy of Elder Care, founded by Harvard-educated geriatrician William Thomas, MD emphasizes quality of life and choice. Eden incorporates pleasant reminders of life into the traditional nursing home setting. The end result is an “elder-centered community,” one with a strong focus on choice, meaningful interactions, and a life worth living.

The Eden philosophy is spread across all aspects of Elmhurst Extended Care. We believe that our Elders are to be honored and respected for the wisdom they bring to our community. Individuality and personal preferences are revered. Elders have the freedom to pursue cherished activities, interact with others and experience new things.

Examples ! of the Eden philosophy in practice include:

  • Emphasis on quality of life and choice in the life of Elders in our care
  • All living areas are filled with lush greenery and plants
  • A growing population of pets as diverse as the Elders who love them
  • Meals and snacks available 24 hours a day
  • A garden where Elders tend to a wide range of herbs and vegetables
  • Regular interaction with children and younger generations
These unique perspectives on Elder Care encourage variety and the spontaneity that comes with living a full life. In turn, they greatly enrich the experience for both Elders and staff, and ultimately exceed any expectations you may have for a nursing home. In short, at Elmhurst Extended Care, we create environments for living, rather than facilities for the frail and aging.

We know that this unique community can only be possible through the compassion and dedication of our extraordinary staf! f. We invite you to learn more about the values and beliefs we hold dea! r and join our innovative team!
