This position is located at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport Division. As a Student Trainee, you will be developing a basic understanding of engineering practices and procedures and familiarity with simple test equipment.

This announcement is restricted to individuals currently accepted for enrollment OR currently enrolled in a qualifying educational institution, as defined by 5 CFR 362.102, on a full or half-time basis AND currently residing within the local commuting area of one of the following locations: Newport, Rhode Island, Mayaguez, Puerto Ri! co, or Greensboro, North Carolina.

KEY REQUIREMENTS
Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation.
You must obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled in school.
You must be a U.S. Citizen.

You must be at least 18 years of age. DUTIES:
The purpose of the Pathways Intern Program is a work experience that provides an opportunity for college students to pursue work that is relevant and beneficial to their academic studies. Work assignments are of limited scope and complexity, designed to assist the trainee in developing a basic understanding of engineering practices and procedures and to develop familiarity with simple test equipment. Trainees provide assistance to higher level personnel performing routine tasking.

The program is an excellent opportunity for college undergraduate students to get an interesting, real-world experience in the field of engineering while contributing to the defense of our nation. Q! UALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

QUALIFICATIONS:
In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient education to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered.

To qualify for this position you must be:

  • Currently enrolled in a high school diploma or post-high school educational program.
This position has Selective Placement Factors (screen-outs) which will be used to determine minimum qualifications for this position. Applicants not possessing these Selective Placement Factors will be found ineligible for this position. The Selective Placement Factors are:

  • United States citizenship.
AND

  • 18 years of age or older.
AND

  • Currently pursuing a MasterÂ's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
AND

  • Currently residing within the loca! l commuting area of Newport, Rhode Island, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, or Gr! eensboro, North Carolina.
This position has a Quality Ranking Factor that will be used to differentiate best qualified candidates. The Quality Ranking Factor is: A cumulative college grade point average of 2.95 or better prior to entrance on duty.

ELIGIBILITY:
You are eligible if you are currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

QUALIFYING EDUCATION:
1) A high school wh! ose curriculum has been approved by a State or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum that has been approved by such a body or a State; and

2) Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education:

(i) A technical or vocational school;

(ii) A 2-year or 4-year college or university;

(iii) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or

(iv) A home-school curriculum

Must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student

Must be taking at least a half-time academic course load, as defined by the school

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION:
  • Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.
  • To be eligible for conv! ersion, Interns must:
o Be a US Citizen

o Complete ! at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program

o Complete their degree or certificate requirements

o Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted

o Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the ParticipantÂ's Agreement, and

o Perform their job successfully

  • Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance.
  • In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640 hour requirement. Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work experience hours.
QUALIFYING EDUCATION:
1) A high school whose curriculum has been approved by a State or local governing body, or ! a home-school curriculum that has been approved by such a body or a State; and
