JOB DESCRIPTIONThe School Nurse-Teacher is a registered nurse who has a college degree as well as additional training in education and dealing with school specific health care issues! . The School Nurse-Teacher’s primary role is to protect and promote the health of students. In the elementary schools, the Nurse-Teacher may be an itinerant, serving more than one building each day. At the middle and high school levels, the Nurse-Teacher is in residence for the full school day.

I.Qualifications 1.Eligibility for certification in the State of Rhode Island as a School Nurse-Teacher. 2.Hold a Rhode Island State license for nursing. 3.Hold a registered nurse certificate from an accredited school of nursing.II.Immediate Supervisor The School Nurse-Teacher, under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, works directly with the school principal and staff members.III.Major Areas of Responsibility1.Conduct school health services: a.Identify and meet the needs of children with special health problems when present in school building; be responsible for the first aid, care of student during an emergency or injury. b.Assist with counseling students up! on request.

c.Provide health education to teachers an! d parents. d.Assist teachers in assessing health needs of students. e.Medication distribution and monitoring. f.Act as a liaison between school, home and community health services.

g.Review physical and immunization records of students to assure compliance and maintain a health record for each student. h.Perform all other nurse-teacher tasks as required.2.Be an advisor to school administrators on all health related matters pertaining to school faculty, personnel, and students.3.With school physician approval, participate and cooperate with the Rhode Island State Health Department in immunization programs.4.Notify parents of children who have health deficits and need attention.5.Communicate with parents when needed to secure further medical information6.Notify teachers of a student’s physical handicap and recommendations when required.IV.Work Year As neededV.Salary$250.00 per dayThe Nurse-Teacher reports directly to the school principal or his/her designee.
