Instruction at Blackstone Valley Prep is driven by local and Common Core State Standards and aligned assessments to determine scholar needs. Our teachers frequently receive targeted feedback and support from their pr! incipal and from their peers and are motivated by a desire to ! continuously improve their practice. Likewise, all of our teachers are held accountable for clearly outlined student outcomes.

The high school will be structured to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners and will utilize a blended learning approach.

We are looking for a founding instructional team with the following experiences/backgrounds:

Math : demonstrated achievement teaching algebra and geometry a pre-requisite and experience teaching upper level math is preferred

English : our team is very collaborative and requires a willingness to co-teach, particularly with the social studies teacher. A familiarity with Common Core Standards and a strong writing and communication skills is a must.

Social Studies : experience teaching Geography and World History a pre-requisite and experience teaching American History is preferred. Like the English teacher, this position requires a willingness to co-teach and ! collaboratively plan across content areas.

Science : “Physics First” will be the course of study for 9 th grade and familiarity--if not experience with this curriculum--is a must.

Special Education : an extensive background in inclusion and co-teaching preferred

The ideal staffing plan also calls for part-time instructional positions in art, theater, p.e./health, technology, Spanish and Mandarin.

The founding student support staff will include:
Full-time operations/office manager

Full-time college counselor

Part-time social worker or behavior interventionist

Part-time school nurse

The founding team is a special team working collaboratively to build a school from scratch, and the roles listed above provide tremendous professional growth opportunities. In addition to teaching, the founding team will have a direct impact in the growth and development of the high school model. A! s such, leadership opportunities are prevalent and the work truly forma! tive.

BVP has an extended school day and year, reflecting the “whatever it takes” mindset of the teachers and school leaders at all of our campuses while providing scholars with instruction that maximizes learning time.

All new staff begins their training in early August. Teachers maximize every second of learning time so that our scholars receive a full day of high quality standards-based instruction and academic support. Teachers also teach several Saturday Opportunity Days to provide targeted small group instruction to students who need additional academic intervention and support. While teachers’ scheduled hours are 7:30AM-4:30PM, it is more common for our team to work much longer hours to prep 100% of scholars for success in college. That said, the structure of our academic day for the high school is “under construction” and will include opportunities for focused teacher-led classroom instruction, online learning, individual tutoring/office ! hours as well as time for enrichment activities and athletics.

BVP team members create a positive academic learning environment where scholars are encouraged to take academic risks and think critically while confronting rigorous, real-world learning challenges.

Responsibilities of a BVP Founding High School Teacher include (but are not limited to):

Commitment to Blended Learning:
In order to fully prepare our scholars for careers of the 21st century (many of which don’t yet exist), BVP High School will leverage blended learning practices to build scholars’ tech literacy, maximize instructional time, and personalize learning.

Instruction Focused on Student Mastery

Hold all scholars to high academic and behavioral expectations. !

Deliver results and increase each individual scholar’s achie! vement.

Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and teach in both whole group and small group settings to support learning.

Actively participate in the RTI process and provide appropriate interventions or enrichment.

Engage 100% of students in the learning

Productive and Joyful Classroom Culture

Create and manage a classroom culture in collaboration with the team to build an exceptional academic, social, and emotional public school experience for the scholars in your class(es).

Positively frame behavioral expectations and adhere to the school-wide behavior system built upon BVP PRIDE values.

Build positive relationships with scholars and their families grounded in the belief that all scholars can achieve at high levels.

Make learning rigorous and fun.

Planning & Use of Data to Drive Instruction

Use data appropriately to plan instruction for a diverse group of learners

Se! t Student Learning Objectives that are ambitious yet attainable

Thoughtfully plan lessons and assessments that build scholars’ basic skills and push them to think at a higher level

Professionalism & Collaboration

Co-teach and co-plan with colleagues

Participate in and lead professional development when appropriate

Commit to the adult PRIDE values including striving for 100% success and supporting our scholars and families to get there; respecting each other and assuming the best; asking for and providing honest feedback to hold ourselves and each other accountable; adhering to team norms that are created jointly; and approaching our work with a sense of urgency anchored in joy and fun.

Conduct yourself in accordance with BVP’s mission and values, attend meetings, and participate in school-related activities whenever appropriate for your position.

Participate in family engagement activities

Maintain ! proper records including submitting daily attendance, grading daily wor! k and completing trimester reports in a timely manner.

Be organized and meet all deadlines

Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred;

A minimum of two years teaching experience in a diverse public school or charter school setting preferred, but not required;

Bilingual candidates preferred but not required;

A data-driven approach to measuring student achievement gains;

A commitment to working with a diverse student and staff population;

Compensation/Professional Growth:
Blackstone Valley Prep offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including medical and vision coverage through our health plan and dental coverage through our dental plan. BV! P also offers short term disability and life insurance at no cost to our team members.

Team members are eligible for up to a 10% bonus pay contingent on meeting agreed upon performance goals which include evaluative data identified in the Rhode Island Teacher Educator Evaluation System .

Full-time BVP team members are immediately 100% vested into BVP’s 401k retirement plan. Additionally, BVP offers a 5% match to all full-time employees.
